Back to Basics – The Revival of BMX in Lesotho

In January 2016 the stars aligned for cycling sport in Lesotho. Thanks toProject Mobility, supported by Bicycles 4 Humanity (Canada), we managed to build a BMX track right in the heart of our capital city, Maseru. Many people and sponsors came together to realise this project. Special thanks goes to all sponsors, especially BMX World Champion Tyrone “TJ” Johns fromGiba Gorge MTB Park in Durban as well as to Bryce Stiebel for donating their valuable time, skills and spending a whole week in the Mountain Kingdom, during which most of the construction happened. Maseru Mall generously made available a piece of land, on which the track was erected. Teboho’s Bike Shop, located right next to the track, is both sponsor and guardian of the track. Already during the construction, many kids from surrounding communities, came to help, watch and test the track. Since completion, there hasn’t been a day without riders on the track. The track is free to use for anyone with a bicycle and a helmet. It is located in a central and safe environment, ideal for kids to come and ride every day after school and during weekends. The track further serves as training ground for the ACE-Team, our proudly Basotho UCI MTB Team. The pictures speak for themselves. We agreed to name the track “Future Stars” BMX track, because we are convinced that the track will provide the opportunity to find and train the next cycling super-star from Lesotho
